When I was a teen, August was the best month of the year. It meant I got to take my humble earnings from picking bulbs/berries/vegetables and spend them on a few very carefully chosen outfits for school. One outfit I distinctly remember — purchased at Kmart (who is down to their last 34 stores I just read) — was a hot pink and black geometric sweater and long black denim skirt. It looked something like this:

Yes, I would still wear this outfit today! Bright colors: still love. Geometrics: yes, please. Denim skirts: uh-huh. So this August I thought it was time for another module. I’m calling it my “Back to School” module, even though I will be going to So Over It Stitch School and it will be in my living room.

This module will be 2 tops, 2 bottoms and 1 topper, just like my first module. The tops need to coordinate with the bottoms and all must coordinate with the topper. Here are the patterns and fabrics I selected:

Tops

Sew Over It Clara Blouse in rayon crepe from Sewing Studio.

New Look 6620 in a yellow and gray “mod dots” rayon knit from Girl Charlee.

Bottoms

Cashmerette Ellis Skirt in Japanese non-stretch denim from Threadbare Fabrics.

Mountain View Pull-on Jeans by Itch to Stitch in khaki ponte de roma from Califabrics.

Topper

Grace Cardigan by DG Patterns in a striped sweater knit, also from Califabrics.

My swatches should give you an idea of the color palette for this module. The Neutrals are: cream, gray and khaki. Basics are: navy, light blue, dusty pink. The Statement color is: greenish-yellow.

All the fabric comes from purchases I made pre-pandemic. I’m not buying anything new to create this module. I got a big stash of zippers at Rerun 2, which has recently re-opened with a ton of safety protocols (masks, gloves, plastic partitions). In fact, I feel safer at the thrift store than at any grocery store.

The wild card in this module is the khaki pants. The ponte fabric I have is incredibly stretchy. It probably has 100% stretch or more. I have made the Mountain View jeans before (in 30% stretch denim) and wear them a ton. I’m pretty sure if I size down, and do the narrow leg, these pants will end up like a jegging, which will be perfect for working from home.
